Abby Girl & The Real Deal are a 50s rhythm & blues dance band out of Orange County, CA. Abby Girl, an Ameripolitan Music Awards nominee for Rockabilly Female 2019, has become a mainstay of the Southern California roots music scene. The band’s influences include such artists as Big Maybelle, Wynona Carr, LaVern Baker, and Irma Thomas.
The band has played on bills with great acts like Wanda Jackson, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys, The Sleepwalkers, Kim Wilson, Petunia & The Vipers and more. Abby Girl has performed at numerous music festivals including the Doheny Blues Festival with Junior Watson, Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend, Nashville Boogie 2017, Ventura Nationals, Rockabilly Extravaganza, Gator by the Bay, Viva East 2019 and more. The band will be performing again at Viva Las Vegas #23 in April of 2020.
The band lineup includes Abby Maharaj on vocals, Al Martinez on guitar, Aaron Martinez on drums and Paul Bouyear on upright bass. Obie Hughes often plays saxophone for the band. After having been focused on playing Latin and roots music from the Southwestern United States, working with Abby Girl has allowed the Martinez brothers to expand their dynamic by paying tribute to music they all admire, early soul and R&B.
Obie Hughes is a 20+ year veteran saxophone player who in addition to his own bands and projects, has performed as a staple musician with the Viva Las Vegas house band and with greats like the Reverend Horton Heat and rock’n’roll creators Lloyd Price and Roddy Jackson.
SDnews.com recently wrote that Abby Girl “is blessed with an impressive voice, which echoes Patsy Cline...a vintage sound that will also appeal to fans of early country music or rock’n’roll." Blues guitar legend Junior Watson says her performances are “Pure fun!”
